Day 8: Zagreb

First day on my own! It was freaky and amazing! Most of the group left at dawn’s crack this morning. I luxuriated until about 8:30am after a sorta restless evening. Left the Hotel Academia (a very Ikea-looking vibe) at around 11:00am to go pick up a rental car at the airport.

After re-acquainting myself with driving a manual vehicle, I headed back to the hotel to pick up my luggage. The travel was thwarted a bit as it was a national holiday here – All Saints Day … so the Google maps were telling me one thing, but the police were not letting me turn here or there and so I think I circled the block for 20 or 30 minutes. Also ended up driving down a narrow promenade street-looking thing that I’m not entirely sure was a road — people didn’t yell or flip me off, so I considered it drive-able.

Now I am at Funk Lounge Hostel in Zagreb. It is absolutely utilitarian and perfect. I have one roommate in my 4-person dorm style accommodation. She is from Zadar (about 3 hours away on the bus) off to a metal concert this evening. I walked a bit and got some food, but still pretty sleepy, so back in my bunk now and catching up here. It’s quite cozy I must say. If I get this travel thing tuned a bit (less luggage, for sure), I can see the appeal of this lifestyle. The hostel is amazing, complete with a hammock, a diverse crowd, someone making dinner in the little kitchenette area … Just perfect.
